Reading, Writing & Study Skills Courses

The ASC offers several one-credit* courses for new students each quarter. In addition, mini-workshops are scheduled throughout the quarter in the ASC and in technical classrooms.

The following is a list of the courses we currently offer and their content:

AS 058 Listening, Note-taking, and Memory Skills

This course improves students’ listening skills and shows them how to take effective classroom notes. It will help students to develop a personal style for recording various types of lectures. The course will also provide students with memory and learning strategies they can use to improve their academic performance.

AS 057: Communication Skills for College Students

This course is designed for students who wish to enhance confidence in oral delivery skills. The objectives of this course are to provide students with strategies and skills for effective oral communication that will help them speak with confidence in a variety of speaking situations. The main focus is on learning through participation in class. Students will learn through a variety of methods such as group discussion, role-play and simulation.

AS 055: Essential Grammar and Punctuation

This course is designed for students who need a refresher of English grammar, style, and punctuation. Students will focus on their own writing, computer practice, and classroom practice to improve their ability to edit and proofread their own work.

AS 056: Building a Better Vocabulary

Students will learn to use context clues, word parts, dictionaries, and thesauruses to expand their academic and general vocabulary. The course will also offer strategies for learning technical vocabulary and students will be introduced to the different types of vocabulary and language, and the four levels of word knowledge. A review of transition words and figures of speech will also be included.

 

*These courses are free to NEIT students and count as credits for financial aid; however, they do NOT fulfill credit requirements for graduation.
