Member of the NEIT Family is Honored
On March 27, Charles K. Rogers, NEIT Special Assistant to the
Presi-
dent, was awarded a lifetime membership to SkillsUSA-VICA. The award
was presented to Charlie at the 25th Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony
of Skills USA-VICA held at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet. Timothy Lawrence,
Executive Director of the national office of SkillsUSA-VICA presented
the ceremonial "red jacket" to Charlie.
Charlie earned the award in recognition
of his long service to Skills USA-VICA, and its earlier incarnation
as VICA. Charlie began his affiliation with VICA in its beginning
when he was president of Hall Institute of Technology, and assisted
in organizing the skills competitions in the printing and drafting
programs. He continued his commitment to Skills USA-VICA when he
joined NEIT by judging leadership competitions.
This is a well-deserved honor for
Charlie, who has dedicated his professional career to the career
development of students. The college community is very proud of
his accomplishment, and extends its sincerest congratulations for
this outstanding achievement.

The latest
expansion project at New England Institute of Technology's Julian
B. Gouse campus in Warwick seems quite straightforward. The college
needed to build a 6600 square foot facility to accommodate the educational
needs of the college's students in the Associate in Science degree
program in Building Construction and Cabinetmaking Technology (C&C).
But the reasons for the construction go far beyond the needs of just
one of the college's programs."
Currently, the classrooms adjacent to
the C&C program are for the Architectural/Building Engineering
Technology, Interior Design Technology, Mechanical Design Technology
and Manufacturing Engineering Technology programs. Due to the increased
number of students in all of these programs, classroom and laboratory
space has been at a premium. When the new home of the C&C program
is complete, this will result in new space for the other programs;
thus making this expansion and construction activity much more far
reaching than it appears.
The new location for the Building Construction
and Cabinetmaking Technology program is at 2457 Post Road. This address
is on the west side of Post Road and across the street from the college's
Center for the Technologies Building. The project began in December
2000 and the expected completion is late May. The contractor for the
project is Dennis Leonardo Builder, Inc of Swansea, Massachusetts.
The relocation of the C&C program to its new home will be completed
between June 9 and July 23. Students will utilize the new building
beginning with the Summer Quarter.
The 6600 square foot facility
will accommodate all of the technical needs of the Building Construction
and Cabinetmaking Technology program. Also located in the building
will be a general education classroom, a multipurpose computer lab
and storage for the lumber used in the C&C labs. "It was
time to upgrade the facilities for this program," stated New
England Tech Executive Vice President, Seth Kurn. "This will
also afford us the opportunity to utilize the once vacated space in
a more efficient and effective manner for our students and staff."
Renovation and construction of the
existing space in the Gouse Building is expected to begin this summer.
