High School Students Learn About the Health Care Field
On Wednesday, March 14, New
England Tech invited area high school students to explore careers
in the health care field at the Health Fair and Career Education
Day.
Students began their visit with an
introduction by Erin Flynn, Special Events Coordinator, which included
a video about careers in Occupational Therapy. From there, groups
visited the Administrative Medical Assistant Technology, Occupational
Therapy Assistant Technology, and Surgical Technology labs to meet
with instructors and participate in hands-on demonstrations and
discussions about career opportunities available to graduates of
each program.
Groups were also allotted time to
visit the vendor portion of the Health Fair, coordinated by Tammy
Capezza, Student Activities Coordinator. Approximately twenty area
health care vendors provided students with the opportunity for real-life
discussion about a variety of careers in the field of health care.
Along with two representatives from
the Providence School Department, students and teachers from the
following schools attended the Career Day: Newport Career and Technical
Center, Warwick Career and Technical Center, Blackstone Valley Vocational
Technical High School, Tolman High School, Riverview School, East
Providence High School, North Providence High School, Scituate High
School, Davies Career and Technical High School, and Shea High School.
Both students and teachers found the experience beneficial in increasing
their awareness of the career opportunities available in health
care.
