| New State-of-the-Art Equipment for Two Programs
The Video and Audio Production (VAP) and Digital Recording Arts (DRA) Technologies have upgraded their audio and music recording capabilities for the Winter 2007 quarter with the installation of new mixing consoles in Studio A and classrooms. These consoles are the latest in control surface technology from Digidesign, the makers of Pro Tools recording systems. With the installation of a new Pro Tools HD system in Studio A, students now have access to eight Pro Tools HD systems. The new control surfaces will greatly enhance the audio processing capabilities and bring multi-track recording to studio A, to integrate with multi-camera video shoots.
Included in this upgrade are new wiring for microphone inputs, along with all new audio wiring and patch bays, high fidelity near field monitors by Dynaudio Acoustics, new condenser, ribbon, and tube amplified microphones by Neumann and Royer, and compression by Avalon.
These upgrades are intended to inspire our DRA students as they plan and produce their music video projects as well as bring new technology to our VAP students for their audio projects.

Early in July 2006, NEIT’s Center for Technology and Industry (CTI) was contacted by Axcelis Technologies, Inc. of Beverly, MA with a unique training request. The company wanted to offer its professional engineers and designers basic drafting and drawing standards training. The use of the latest computer assisted drafting and drawing software permitted engineers, designers and drafters to quickly draw up new equipment parts and tools for manufacturing.
For over two decades Axcelis has delivered vital equipment, services and process expertise to the semiconductor manufacturing industry, helping customers reach high levels of productivity with each new technology generation. Chipmakers worldwide rely on Axcelis’ tools and equipment to produce the transistors that power all electronics, from computers, servers, cameras, cell phones, personnel music players and more.
Fred Santaniello, CTI Account Executive, and Mechanical Engineering Technology Assistant Professor Steve Lavoie met with representatives from Axcelis to design and deliver a training program. It was decided that the training would be formatted as a series of workshops, rather than lectures, using actual Axcelis drawings presented to the engineers and designers with the challenge of identifying mistakes or confusing information on the drawings. Workshops were held in September and October 2006 at the Axcelis Advance Technology Center in Beverly, MA with Steve Lavoie leading more than 30 employees through the two 12-hour workshops. The results of participant evaluations completed at the end of the training were outstanding.
Axcelis, with 1600 employees worldwide and revenues of over $627 million in 2005 found New England Institute of Technology’s approach to staff training to be highly effective. The Center continues to conduct training for Axcelis’ professional staff. Steve Lavoie is currently presenting a six-hour Drafting Standards and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Workshop. Axcelis plans to continue to have NEIT’s Center for Technology and Industry provide training on an on-going basis to its employees. |
The Architectural Building Engineering Technology Department held senior presentations for the Fall Quarter graduates on December 22, 2006.
The High Rise Design Studio class was assigned a project to create a master plan for a parcel of land located on Allens Avenue in Providence called Narragansett Landing, a 280-acre site currently occupied by industrial uses. Developers are seeking to develop a mixed use development in Narragansett Landing to include housing, office buildings and a series of waterfront parks as part of the Providence 2020 Master Plan.
Students were commissioned to be the architects of the project and develop the programmatic, design imagery and technical aspects. Site design requirements included a master plan for a high rise condominium, townhouses, a parking garage, maritime use, open public access space, and a 125,000 square foot office building. They also had to create a building design for the condominium tower to include restaurants/cafes, fitness centers, and 100 condominiums. |
