High School Students Visit New England Tech

Over 100 students and teachers from seven Rhode Island and Massachusetts high schools attended NEIT’s Building Technology Career Education Day on December 1.  Building Technology Career Education Day is an annual event held at New England Tech that introduces students to the construction industry and other related industries.

Members of the RI Builders’ Association conducted an employer panel for students, where they discussed the skills and requirements considered necessary for jobs in the field.  In addition, representatives from the RI Department of Labor and Training discussed industry needs and apprenticeships in the heating field.

Other industry representatives included Paradox Solid Surface, Inc.; Kitchen Tune-Up; and the Oil Heat Institute.  Each workshop provided students insight into the various careers available to them.

Students also took tours of the college’s Building Construction & Cabinetmaking Technology, Electrical Technology, and Architectural Building Engineering Technology departments and participated in a variety of workshops presented by NEIT faculty members.

Building Construction & Cabinetmaking Students Display Their Work

John Lee, 4th quarter Building Construction and Cabinetmaking Technology (BCC) student, coordinated a show in the Hall of Fame Room last quarter to display some of the projects constructed by BCC students.  Some of the beautiful pieces displayed were completed during the cabinetmaking portion of the program and included bookshelves, jewelry boxes, and tables.

The cabinetmaking portion of the BCC program gives students an overview of different construction techniques dealing with various types of woods and stains.  Some required projects include working with different types of joints and making a tapered leg table, letter holder, roll top bread box and a base cabinet.
