Kinetic Sculpture

Three Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) students designed, fabricated, and installed a kinetic sculpture for their senior capstone project. Tom Just, Roy Correia and Kevin Costa describe the kinetic sculpture in their project statement: "... a cyclical assembly consisting of a motor and conveyor system that transports a ball to a specific height where enough potential energy exists so that the force of gravity can direct it down a series of pathways where the ball can trigger a number of actuators before returning to the bottom where the cycle can begin again.” Through the process of creating this sculpture the 12th quarter students were able to exercise their knowledge of mechanics, dynamics, CAD skills, project planning, manufacturing processes, geometric dimensioning, and team working skills.  The sculpture is displayed in a display case on the first floor of the Gouse Building, outside of the MET laboratory, so prospective engineering students who tour the campus can see a sample of the MET students’ work.

Tom, Roy, and Kevin began their capstone project in October of 2006 during the 11th quarter of their Mechanical Engineering Technology bachelor program and were able to complete and install it during week nine of their final quarter.
