High School Students Earn College Credit

Madeline Perreault, Principal of Toll Gate High School, has announced that students at Toll Gate will have the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school.

Under the newly formed articulation agreement between New England Institute of Technology and Toll Gate High School, students taking courses in the AutoCAD Program at Toll Gate High School may earn college credit through the Advanced Tech Program at the college.

“By transferring credits, students may receive advanced standing and reduce the costs of tuition,” said Tara Totoro, Assistant Coordinator of High School Programs at New England Institute of Technology. Geralyn Canning, of the Guidance Department, said “Earning college credit while in high school is an outstanding opportunity for students who are planning to pursue careers in technical fields.”

Students taking specific courses in the AutoCAD Program at Toll Gate High School may earn up to four (4) college credits towards an associate degree in Architectural Building Engineering Technology or up to eight (8) college credits towards an associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology at New England Institute of Technology.

Dean D’Andrea, Technology Education/Art Department Chair at Toll Gate High School, worked with Michael Hayes, Architectural Building Engineering Technology Assistant Professor; Bruce Feodoroff, Mechanical Engineering Technology Associate Professor and Chair; and Tara Totoro to develop the articulation agreement.

“Advanced Tech will offer students an opportunity for a head start in a career area and also get them involved in a post-secondary education with a specific direction in mind,” said Ms. Totoro. “We congratulate the administration and faculty at Toll Gate High School for offering this opportunity to their students.”

Recruitment for guest speakers

Dr. Don Kieffer is looking for guest speakers to address students in two different psychology courses currently offered at NEIT: Human Relations in the Workplace and Developing Leadership in the Workplace. He is interested in identifying NEIT grads who are currently in management positions and are willing to talk with students about customer service and/or the challenge of managing people. Guest speakers would be interviewed in front of the class by the instructor and would be given a set of discussion questions in advance of the class. There is a need for speakers for both daytime and evening class sections. If interested, contact Dr. Kieffer at 401-739-5000, ext. 3541 or dkieffer@neit.edu.

SkillsUSA Fundraiser, a Big Splash

NEIT’s SkillsUSA Chapter would like to thank all of the students, faculty and staff who came out in support of the SkillsUSA Dunk Tank fundraiser. SkillsUSA was able to raise $396.00 from this event. The students would like to thank RI Rentals for donating the dunk tank, as well as Modern Swimming Pool Supply Co. for donating 500 gallons of water. Because of their generous donations, all of the money raised will go directly to the SkillsUSA national travel fund.

Throughout the quarter, SkillsUSA continues to raise money for the national travel fund by selling lollipops, candy bars, and raffle tickets for reserved parking spots. All parking spots are reserved from week 1 through week 10.

The winners from the Summer Quarter raffle were:

Samantha Sylvia (DRA), winner of the CT Bldg. lot parking spot
The winner of the Gouse Bldg. parking spot did not come forward. The winning ticket was # 9236160. If you hold this ticket, please contact Melissa McCulloch at mmcculloch@neit.edu.

Suburban Energy Services Selects NEIT

The Center For Technology and Industry (CTI) at New England Tech has begun a long and lasting training relationship with Suburban Energy Services of New Jersey.

Suburban Energy Services, known for years throughout the county as Suburban Propane, Acquired Agway Fuel and Feed Stores and has combined the two companies into one, which will now be known as Suburban Energy Services. It is one of the largest propane and oil distributors and the second largest distributor and installer of Carrier Air-Conditioning systems in the U.S. Located in thirty states and employing over 5000 people, it is a company on the move and has made a commitment to continued education by keeping the sales and technical staff trained in the latest theories and hands-on practices in HVAC training.

CTI has been working very closely with Suburban Energy Services in providing training in a multitude of technical disciplines and is currently involved in providing technical training as far away as Oregon, Florida, and Syracuse, New York. Several training sessions
have also been conducted at NEIT's campus. Several pilot programs in basic electrical and advanced gas controls have just been completed. The college is also involved in helping create a new curriculum for Suburban Energy Services in HVAC installation, and is on the docket to provide air conditioning and EPA testing this winter.

One of the projects that NEIT has completed for Suburban Energy Services was to build exclusive electrical and advanced gas control lab boards. The purpose of the boards is to provide the participants the opportunity to experience hands-on exercises in electricity and advanced gas controls anywhere in the country without the use of a full working laboratory. The boards were developed with shipping in mind and they have been shipped from Florida to Oregon and back to New England in their own custom crates.

Three departments at the college have played a very active role in making these programs a huge success: the Electrical Technology Department headed by Meg McKenna; the Heating Technology Department chaired by Ron Como; and the Refrigeration and Air
Conditioning Technology Department led by Gordon Preiss. The technical instruction is
very similar to the courses that are offered at the college to our Associate in Science degree
candidates.

CTI can customize a technical training program for any business, organization, or trade
association. If you are interested in learning more about the Center for Technology and
Industry at New England Tech, please visit our website at www.neitcti.com Or call us at
