Robert Shapiro
to Receive Honorary Degree

Robert Shapiro

Warwick Superintendent of Schools Robert J. Shapiro will receive an honorary degree from New England Institute of Technology at the college's commencement ceremony on May 7. Shapiro was recently named the Rhode Island School Superintendent of the Year and has been nominated for this year's National Superintendent of the Year Award.
He began work in the Warwick school system more than four decades ago - teaching social studies at Veterans Memorial High School. He advanced through a variety of positions over the years including almost 20 years as principal of Toll Gate High School- the first principal that school ever had.
Shapiro helped lead the Warwick school system through several decades of enormous growth and change. He helped develop new programs and curriculum as well as spearheading the efforts to increase handicapped access to school facilities.

He is also involved in overseeing a major school improvement program for the entire school system.
In addition to his many accomplishments in the public school system, Shapiro has been involved in a number of other community projects including the Boys and Girls Club of Warwick and the Elizabeth Buffam Chase House for Battered Women. He also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for NEIT.
