The following is the speech written and delivered
by Leah Cantelmo, a Tech Scholar Award winner, to the families and
friends of the Best Of Tech and Tech Scholar Award winners
|
 |
I would like to begin
by welcoming family, friends, and college faculty and staff to the
2000 Best of Tech Award Ceremony. I am extremely proud and honored
to have been chosen to represent my technology as well as my fellow
award winners here today. Each and every student present has been
chosen to represent their respective technology based on their academic
excellence, leadership, dedication and support of the college, and
I am proud to be included in this outstanding group of students. Each
of us thanks you for the honors bestowed on us today.
The decision to obtain an education
is never an easy one. I know personally, as well as from my fellow
classmates, the challenges and sacrifices that we all encountered
over the past two years that successfully brought us to the conclusion
of our educational experience here at the college.
I have come to develop great respect
and appreciation for the faculty and staff of New England Tech. They
know first hand the importance and value of a good education and offer
the students whatever support necessary to be successful and reach
their goals. I consider the Surgical Technology faculty an integral
part of my success as a student. It was their belief in me, which
allowed me the chance to help my fellow classmates as a peer tutor.
I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank every faculty
and staff member who contributed to my being able to be here today.
I want to extend a fervent thank you
to a special man in my life, Derek. I had been wishing to return to
school for a long time and it was he who originally encouraged me
to follow my dream in this direction. I was extremely apprehensive
at the idea of gong back to school after a ten-year hiatus. I knew
that for me to be successful, I would have to leave my management
career behind and become dependent on him. I have always been very
independent and self-sufficient and was extremely proud of it! For
this reason, the decision to return to school was one of the most
difficult I have ever had to make. Derek has supported me every step
of the way and I consider him a very special person for doing so.
I also want to thank my children, Nicholas,
Holly, and Tea, for their patience and understanding. When I did finally
make the decision to return to school, I tried to explain what the
next two years would be like. They didn't fully understand at that
time the commitment and sacrifices I was talking about. I know at
times they have resented the time I spent with my textbooks, projects,
and studying. They are the main reason I have pushed myself so hard
to attain what at times, seemed impossible.
I would like to close today by congratulating
each of my fellow award recipients. I know first hand the discipline
and commitment you maintained to your education, which allowed you
to be here today. You should all be very proud of you're accomplishments.
Thank You!!!!! |
