Student Employment Expo a Huge Success

The Career Services Office held its 3rd Student Employment Expo on October 26.  The Employment Expo is an event for students who are looking for part-time, full-time and seasonal work while they are attending school.  Nineteen area companies including retail stores, banks, and employment agencies attended the expo.  Some of the participating companies included: Aerotek/Bank of America, Blinds To Go, FedEx Ground, Jay Packaging Group, Sam’s Club, and The Home Depot.  The employers brought applications and informational material for students interested in employment.  Some employers scheduled interviews on the spot.

Employer comments were excellent.  The Babies R’ Us representative stated, “All applicants were well-qualified and pleasant.”  A representative from UPS said, “NEIT always provides us with quality students.  This event gets better every year.” The Herb Chambers representative wrote, “I was not expecting this many people. It was nice to have so many eager students.”

This event provides a great way for students to connect with area employers and find jobs to help pay for their tuition.  The Career Services Office plans to hold another Student Employment Expo in the spring.

Recruitment for guest speakers

Dr. Don Kieffer is looking for guest speakers to address students in two different psychology courses currently offered at NEIT: Human Relations in the Workplace and Developing Leadership in the Workplace.  He is interested in identifying NEIT grads who are currently in management positions and are willing to talk with students about customer service and/or the challenge of managing people.  Guest speakers would be interviewed in front of the class by the instructor and would be given a set of discussion questions in advance of the class.  There is a need for speakers for both daytime and evening class sections.  If interested, contact Dr. Kieffer at 401-739-5000, ext. 3541 or dkieffer@neit.edu.

MGT Students Participate in First Online Securities Trading Simulation

During the FIN 430 Investments course in the summer quarter, Business Management Technology students took part in “Stock-Trak”, an Internet financial simulation that allows its users to practice trading all types of securities including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, options and futures. Stock-Trak has been used by over 80% of the top business schools in the country and by 50,000 people overall last year. While the students are trading, they learn basic investment principles such as diversifying their portfolio, investing in good quality companies and investing on a regular basis.

The trading period lasts for 8 weeks and students compete against each other for the highest portfolio value by the end of the simulation. Comments from some of the students who participated include: “It was a great experience and I also had fun doing it,” “It was real-time trading so it showed what would happen if I was actually investing,” and, “The simulation was fun and it gave me a better understanding of the course material.”

The simulated trading is on a real-time basis on most of the major stock exchanges, including international exchanges. Stock-Trak Portfolio Simulations is in its 14th year of providing custom stock market simulations to the education market.
