The selection process for the 2001 Tech Scholars Award consisted
of having the 26 Best of Tech Award winners complete a detailed
application, which they submitted to the award selection committee.
The committee was made up of six individuals representing a cross-section
of our college community. After evaluating categories, including
excellence in academics, attendance, volunteerism and extracurricular
activities, the committee members rated each application numerically.
The scores were tabulated, and the five applicants with the highest
point designation received the Tech Scholar Award. This year's
recipients are: Beatrice Dean, Ronald Fraser, Thelma Mae Maguire,
Deo Sharma, and Dawn Wagner.

Brothers Tie for Award
For the first time, two students in the same technology tied for the
Best of Tech Award. It was only fitting that both Matt and Tim Starr
won the award for Advanced Automotive Technology, because everything
they did throughout NEIT, they did together. They both lived at their
parents' home, commuted one hour from Auburn, MA, and were in all
the same classes.
Prior to coming to NEIT they were both interested in having fun.
Matt enjoyed high school and "took the following four years
off." He worked as a snowboard instructor during the winters
in Vermont until a motorcycle accident left him unable to do so.
Tim's fun started in high school. He ended up leaving school and
later got his GED. He worked a lot of "bum jobs" and eventually
decided he wanted to do something more with himself. Tim had been
interested in the automotive field since he was little, so when
literature from NEIT arrived at his home, he decided to visit with
an admissions officer to check out the Automotive Technology program.
Matt decided to go along for the ride to NEIT. He also had an interest
in fixing automobiles; however, hadn't considered going to school
for it. They both decided to enroll. On the way home, Matt apologized
to Tim for "busting in on his education." Tim didn't mind.
They found the program "so much better than high school,"
and really applied themselves. They were focused on their education,
had great attendance throughout the program and earned good grades.
Both Tim and Matt felt that "the instructors and the equipment
are incredible at NEIT. The instructors always went above and beyond
the call of duty and made classes really enjoyable." Tim said
he will keep his notes forever, "which are in a notebook at
least 5" thick."
Tim and Matt were really pleased, or in the words of Matt, "amazed,"
that they both won the Best of Tech award. According to their instructor,
Mike Isabella, "It was well deserved. Given a tough problem,
they were determined to solve it. They were always willing to attack
a job. This is one of the best attributes a technician can have.
They were both good students. I'm sorry to see them go."
Now that NEIT is over, the togetherness shared by
the brothers may not have ended; they both sat for the BMW STEP
program entrance exam, and are awaiting the results. Hopefully,
the news will come on the same day

Brothers Matt and Tim Starr with their Best of
Tech Awards.
