NEIT'S NEWEST CLUB
Movie Screening Club
The VRP/DRA department is sponsoring a screening club in the
Media Presentation Theatre (next to room 143, 1st floor, Center
for the Technologies Building). The idea behind the club is
to have people that are interested in film come and enjoy
a free showing of a great movie and then discuss it afterwards.
Movies have included Vanilla Sky, Reservoir Dogs, The Matrix,
Lord of the Rings, and Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the
Moon. Join us Thursdays at 5 p.m. in the MPT. All are welcome
to attend.
SkillsUSA Travels to Kansas
City
Once again, students from NEIT traveled to Kansas City, MO,
on June 21-25, 2004, for the SkillsUSA National Leadership
and Skills Conference. The SkillsUSA Championships are the
showcase for the best career and technical students in the
nation. This year there were over 4,500 contestants in 77
separate contests.

Rear from left: Mike Lebel, Paul Durand
III, Mike Driscoll, Justin Lebel. Front: Derek Martel and
Missy McCulloch
In this year's competition, four incredibly talented participants,
all of whom placed in the top fifteen for their respective
competitions, represented NEIT. They were Paul Durand III,
a recent graduate of the Automotive Technology program, who
placed fifteenth in the Automotive Service Technology contest;
Michael Lebel, an Electronics Technology student, who placed
eleventh in the Electronics Technology contest; Justin Lebel,
a Mechanical Engineering Technology student, who placed eighth
in the Precision Machining contest; and Michael Driscoll,
a recent graduate from the Mechanical Engineering Technology
who received a national silver medal for his second place
finish in the Technical Drafting contest.
Our students competed against up to 42 different post secondary
schools from across the country at the national conference.
The four students were accompanied to the conference by their
advisor Melissa McCulloch, NEIT Post Secondary SkillsUSA Advisor,
who couldn't have been prouder of them.
Also attending the national conference was Derek Martel,
an Automotive Professor and the Automotive Section Advisor
for SkillsUSA. Erin Flynn, Coordinator of the High School
program, was spreading the news about NEIT at the booth in
the TECHSPO, the trade show for SkillsUSA. Steve Lavoie, a
Mechanical Engineering Professor, was also there to support
our students, and is a member of the National Education Team
where he helps coordinate the national technical drafting
contest.
The SkillsUSA organization would also like to send a special
thank you out to the faculty and staff for all their help
in getting students ready for the state competition and for
all their help with meeting and fundraising ideas. It is because
of the support of the faculty and staff at NEIT that SkillsUSA
was able to grow in membership by 250% this year. If you are
interested in becoming a student or professional member or
if you are interested in being a corporate sponsor of our
NEIT chapter, please contact Melissa McCulloch, NEIT SkillsUSA
Advisor, at mmcculloch@neit.edu

New England Institute of Technology hosts Grrl Tech
On Friday, April 23, New England Tech was
the host to 160 high school students and teachers as part
of the Grrl Tech event sponsored by RITEC and the Rhode
Island Department of Education. The purpose of Grrl Tech
is to offer high school girls an opportunity to participate
in hands-on technical experiences.
NEIT faculty members Sally Kingsbury, VRP; Steve Lavoie,
MCT; Phil Marks, ABT; Patricia DaSilva, IT; Marty Truchon,
CST; Virgilio Tavares, AUT; Robert Kachanis, MT; and Margaret
McKenna, ELY, provided hands-on workshops for the students.
NEIT student volunteers, including several SkillsUSA members,
assisted the faculty.
An employer panel was available to answer questions from
both teachers and students. Moderated by NEIT's Pat Blakemore,
the panel consisted of the following employers: Sharon Moylan
of Emerge Inc., Tonya Robichaud and Kristen Macken of Mediaweave,
and Christine Wilson from the University of Rhode Island.
