Another
NEIT First
On-Site
Associate Degree
Offered at EMC
The start of the new millenium
also represented the start of another New England Tech first. On
January 11th, with the approval of the Massachusetts Board of Higher
Education, the college commenced a part-time Associate in Science
degree program in Electronics Technology on-site at EMC Corporation
in Franklin, MA. This degree program can be completed in 36 months
and is designed to assist EMC in maintaining its position as the
market leader in enterprise storage technology. The program is also
designed to accommodate the busiest of professional and personal
schedules, and reinforces the importance of life-long learning for
future career success.
The employees of EMC are able to
avail themselves of two different schedules. This option provides
them with the opportunity to choose a schedule that works best for
them. The sections are offered twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The first section meets between 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and accommodates
both 2nd and 3rd shift employees; the second section begins at 5:00
p.m. and ends at 9:30 p.m. and is preferred primarily by the 1st
shift employees, although it is also available for the 3rd shift
employees. This academic quarter, the students are enrolled in two
class offerings - (ELS 116) Technical Skills in the Laboratory and
(MA 110) Introduction to College Math. "Both classes lay a solid
foundation for the student's future success in the entire program,"
stated Electronics Department Co-chairman Jim Reardon. Assistant
Professor of Electronics Technology, Michael Recorvitz, is serving
as the lead technical instructor for the program at EMC, and is
also teaching this quarter's offering. Joan Dambruch, adjunct instructor
of mathematics is teaching this quarter's math offering.
The program at EMC will include
academic and technical course offerings such as AC Principles, DC
Principles, Computer Applications, Technical Math I and II, English
I or II and a humanities or social science elective. The program
has also been customized to fit the needs of EMC while maintaining
the academic integrity of the program. It includes technical courses
which will educate and train the students in enterprise storage
technology and advanced enterprise storage technology. Enterprise
storage is the foundation of EMC's business.
The EMC Corporation/New England
Tech relationship has evolved into one of the most unique and mutually
beneficial collegiate/private sector partnerships in the country.
EMC Corporation has hired more than 150 New England Tech graduates.
They employ Electronics Technology, Computer and Network Servicing
Technology and Electronics Engineering Technology graduates. The
relationship further evolved when EMC and New England Tech created
a customized 9-month Associate in Science Electronics Technology
degree program to meet EMC's increased demand for electronics technicians.
In this effort, EMC assists the student with an interest-free tuition
loan that is waived when the graduate works 1 year for EMC. Since
this program's inception, sixty students have pursued this unique
educational opportunity. The college also conducts its Bachelor
of Science degree program in Electronics Engineering Technology
at the company's manufacturing facility in Franklin, MA. Again,
the college customized the curriculum to meet EMC's workforce development
needs. This program is also conducted on a part-time basis.
At the college’s 1999 commencement
exercises, New England Tech conferred an honorary Doctor of Science
degree upon EMC founder and chairman of the board, Richard Egan.
Mr. Egan was chosen because of the unique relationships that EMC
has forged between business and education. Under his leadership,
EMC has become one of the most stunning business success stories
of the past ten years. We at New England Institute of Technology
are proud to share in the EMC story and hope that we will continue
to play a role in this company's success.
