Grads Make It To The Big City
Red Sox Fan Moves to N.Y.
Chris Harrington jokes
that he considered not taking a great position with a company in
New York because Red Sox fans can't live with Yankee fans. The truth
of the matter is that Chris feels his move to NY to work as a web
developer with R/GA Interactive is one of the best things that ever
happened to him.
Chris's journey to R/GA Interactive began
when he was working on air at WCTK in Providence. He had been in
the broadcast industry for 13 years and was ready for a career change.
With an interest in computers, he started checking out computer
programs at Rhode Island colleges. His search led to New England
Tech and he enrolled in the Internet Communications Technology (ICT)
program.
"I loved the ICT program. After
my first class with Rick Mitchell (ICT Department Chair) I knew
I would love it. I worked full-time while attending school and ran
on adrenaline for 18 months! It was very exciting," said Chris.
"In fact, it was Rick Mitchell who recommended that I go to
New York when I graduated."
Before making contact with R/GA,
Chris applied to another New York company and within a half-hour
of emailing his resume, he was contacted for an interview. During
the interview, the interviewer felt Chris would be a good match
for a position at the company for which her husband worked, R/GA
Interactive. Her foresight turned out to be Chris's good fortune.
R/GA is a web development house that
began business in 1977. Its early work was in TV and movies, and
the company's first job was the opening credits of the Superman
movie. The company is currently involved in all aspects of web-based
work and interactive kiosks. R/GA was recently the recipient of
a dozen honors in the Web Marketing Association's 2000 Web Awards.
Sites designed by R/GA took home three "Best of Industry"
awards, four "Outstanding Web Site" honors and five "Standard
of Excellence" awards.
Chris works in the company's programming
department and is part of the team that is currently handling the
Purina account, among others. Chris is a web master and does coding
and site maintenance as well as handling his accounts' email. He
was responsible for the coding behind the search tool on CatChow.com.
Chris's education prepared him to
step right into his position at R/GA. "NEIT aquainted me with
all aspects of how web sites work. I went to New York with the skills
I need to succeed."
Hoboken, NJ is Chris's current home.
He is quick to point out that Hoboken is the home of the first organized
baseball game. And yes, although he walks among New Yorkers, he
is still a loyal Red Sox fan.
(Chris is providing his email address
so students interested in knowing more about R/GA can contact him
with questions. He can be reached at Chrish@rga.com)
