It's
a Family Affair
|
|
NEIT students, faculty and staff feel a connection
through their participation in the great New England Tech college
community. The students highlighted below have a different connection
to one another.
|

Michelle Rofino and her dad, Joseph Rofino, Sr.
|
Joseph Rofino Sr. came to NEIT after an illness forced him to make
a career change. This is Joe's second time at NEIT; the first was
about 20 years ago when he completed a degree with training in refrigeration,
plumbing and heating. This time around, Joe finds himself even more
involved in the learning experience as well as more confident and
outgoing. His daughter, Michelle Rofino came to NEIT after being
a full-time student at RIC. She came because she wanted a major
that would lead her to a career in architecture. Both she and Joe
are students in the Architectural/Building Engineering Technology
program; Michelle will finish her AS degree in March and Joe will
finish his BS degree in

| October 2001. They share the same long-term goal of
one day working together in their own engineering firm. Joe and Michelle
feel that attending school together has made them even closer. Michelle
said that she and Joe have become friends. |
| Two other students who share a parent child relationship
are Allen Silva, Sr. and Allen Silva, Jr. Both are in the Refrigeration/Air
Conditioning/Heating Technology (RACH) associate degree program. Allen
started in March 2000 and his dad started this January. The younger
Allen enrolled in NEIT with the encouragement of his father and the
knowledge that his job behind a deli counter wouldn't take him far.
After seeing his son start school, Allen senior found himself in a
layoff after spending 25 years working in maintenance. He chose the
RACH program because it is similar to the kind of work he had been

| doing. Both really enjoy being at NEIT. When they meet
in the hallway, Allen refers to his dad as Pops. Like Michelle and
Joe, they share a very close relationship. Allen considers his father
to be his best friend. |
|

Brothers Michael and Marcel Nault
|
Michael and Marcel Nault are brothers in the associate degree program
in Computer and Network Servicing Technology and both will finish
in March. Before coming to NEIT their work experience was different:
Mike was a Marine Security Guard at embassies in Kuwait and Malaysia,
and Marcel was a PC specialist. Mike came to NEIT because he knew
a degree would open doors for career opportunity, and Marcel wanted
"the paper" that is acknowledgement that he can do the
computer work he loves to do. Both are currently employed in the
computer field and have goals to advance within that field. They

and study purposes as well as for the sharing of information. |
|
Holly and Mike Pasko are husband and wife and had worked as floor
supervisors in the gaming industry prior to enrolling at NEIT. Neither
found satisfaction in the profession and knew there was only limited
opportunity for advancement. Mike chose the associate degree program
in Electronics Technology with the goals of obtaining employment
in the semiconductor industry and furthering his education for an
MBA. Holly enrolled in Multimedia Design Technology and will search
for employment as a multimedia designer. They feel that attending
school together has been a great experience. Because they worked
together for years, they have learned to rely upon one another for
motivation and support when needed. And although sometimes balancing
home and

expect to gain anything long-term without sacrificing in the short-term. |
