Donations for the Surgical Technology Department

ST instructor Christine Kennedy, right, identifies surgical items to students.

The Surgical Technology (ST) Department has acknowledged and expressed great appreciation to Newport Hospital, Newport, RI; Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam, CT; and Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro, MA; who have graciously and continuously donated operating room instrumentation as well as supplies the hospitals no longer need.

Many of the items donated are expensive catheters, suture material and instruments that the students would not be exposed to if not for the generosity of these hospitals. The items are welcome additions to the ST department's ever-growing surgical technology lab. Students find it extremely helpful to utilize the supplies in the mock surgeries performed in the operating room lab in preparation for the "real thing".

Web Registration

NEIT is moving toward enabling the entire student body to register for classes via the web. To assure the success of our new web registration program, select groups of students were invited to web register over the past two quarters. Last quarter approximately 30% of our students successfully registered themselves via the web!

This quarter we will be extending the opportunity to register on the web to the entire student population. There are many potential benefits to using this tool. They include elimination of classroom interruptions to complete the registration process, increased availability of Student Advisors to meet with students one-on-one, and increased availability of the Registrar's staff to assist student's with their individual needs.

In order for Web Registration to be successful it is important that we all support the effort completely. Students will be receiving access information through the mail, in class, through posters, and at a new student web page http://students.neit.edu. Once at this site all the students have to do is choose "Web For Student" and Register for Classes. This site will also provide access to Blackboard, Web Registration, Campus Pipeline, and other college services.

Each student will be informed of a two-week window of time within which they must register. All students should complete their registrations within the time slot allotted to them. Class availability becomes much more of an issue for those who register late. The schedule, which follows, refers to the current Winter quarter status of the students:

Mon Feb 11 - Fri Mar 1           AS Qtr 5&6 plus all BS students

Mon Feb 25 - Fri Mar 8           AS Qtr 3&4

Mon Mar 4 - Fri Mar 15          AS Qtr 1&2 plus all Pre-Techs

If a student misses his/her scheduled time then he/she must go to the Registrar's Office to register in the traditional manner.

Technical assistance will be available to every student, regardless of their technology, at posted times and locations on campus from February 11 through March 15 (throughout web registration). Staff members in both the Library and the Academic Skills Center will also be trained and available for assistance.

Another thing that we learned from our test quarters was that when it comes to instructions, less is more. Basically, pointing the students to the sites and letting them go seems to work best. The Student Advisors or the Registrar's Staff can answer faculty and student questions concerning Web Registration.

Be assured, help is available for every student. Any student who prefers not to register online, or who is unable to complete registration via the web, or who misses the window of opportunity to utilize the web registration system may register in person at the Registrar's Office. No student will ever be turned away.
