Technology Career day held at New England Tech
Over 300 high school students and teachers visited New England Institute
of Technology's (NEIT) Building Technology Career Education Day
on November 14. Students visited workshops in Building Construction/Cabinetmaking
Technology, Electrical Technology, Plumbing Technology, Heating
Technology, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology, and Architectural
Building Engineering Technology.
The Building Construction/Cabinetmaking department offered a workshop
on work friendly buildings, as well as a tour of the Construction
lab. In addition, students interested in Building Construction/Cabinetmaking
had the opportunity to view an employer panel featuring Stormtite
Home Improvement, AA Building, and J. Sepe Construction; as well
as attend industry presentations by Paradox Solid Surface, Inc.,
and EnviroClean. A representative from the RI Builders' Association
was also available to answer questions.
NEIT faculty and students in the Electrical Technology department
presented a demonstration of the skills required in the electrical
field, along with a discussion of microprocessor-based controllers
for automation. Industry representatives from Interstate Electrical
Services, Wayne J. Griffin Electric, and Commercial Electric offered
discussions about career opportunities in the electrical field.
Fred Reisman, Plumbing Technology Department Chair, highlighted
the skills required and opportunities available in the plumbing
field. Gordon Preiss provided a tour of the Refrigeration and Air
Conditioning lab and discussed skills, opportunities, and equipment
used in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. Clint Shurtleff
presented a tour of the Heating lab, along with a discussion of
career options available. RI Department of Labor representative
Ted Whittaker spoke about the needs of the heating industry as well
as the required skill levels.
The Architectural Building Engineering Technology department presented
workshops on 3D-Viz and structures in architecture. NEIT student
work was available for high school students and teachers to view.
In addition to the various workshops, students were also offered
the opportunity to attend a general college information session
presented by the Admissions Office. The session provided an overview
of the admissions process.

Offers College Credits to Eight RI High School Academies of Information
Technology.
New
England Institute of Technology announces that it will offer academic
credit for technical skills or competencies mastered by students
completing the National Academy Foundation's (NAF) Academy of Information
Technology (AOIT) program in RI high schools. Currently there are
eight schools statewide offering AOIT: the Area Career and Technical
Centers in Warwick, Woonsocket and Newport; Times Squared Academy
and Hope High in Providence; Davies Career and Technical High School;
South Kingstown; and Mt. Hope (Bristol/Warren) High Schools. "NEIT
is an institution focused on student success and recognizes the
value of the NAF AOIT programs in preparing high school students
to develop their technical skills for that purpose," said Erin
Flynn, Coordinator of the High School Program at NEIT.
