Faculty Receive Oppenhiemer Award

Associate Professor of Architectural Building Engineering Technology, Eric Kirton, and Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology, Steve Lavoie, were recently awarded the Oppenhiemer Best Paper Award. The award was the result of a white paper they co-authored and which was presented by Eric at the American Society for Engineering Education/Engineering Design Graphics Division (ASEE/EDGD) Mid-Year Conference.
The paper and presentation entitled “Utilizing Rapid Prototyping for Architectural Modeling” focused on Eric and Steve’s research in rapid prototyping for architectural engineering. Rapid prototyping was developed in the late 1980’s primarily for the mechanical market. Transitioning this technology for use with architectural modes has several inherent problems. The paper outlined the successes and failures they have encountered as their research continues. Actual architectural models of student projects were shown and presented, which strengthened their findings to date.
Eric commented, “The success of the paper is ultimately indebted to the 8 year collaboration between Steve and myself and our common interest in 3 dimensional modeling and experimentation with visualization for graphics education.” When asked, Steve Lavoie said, “I am very proud of this award; however, much of the success of what we have accomplished belongs to Eric. His persistence and determination have driven me in this pursuit. We’ve only scratched the surface, there is a lot more work to be done and with the appropriate commitment, I know we can be pioneers in this new field of rapid prototyping for architecture.”
In addition to the Oppenhiemer Award, the paper has been chosen for publication in the “Journal for Engineering Education”.
Congratulations to Eric and Steve for this accomplishment.
